This course is a 12-week course that will help equip operators and other
personnel with the knowledge and skills necessary to operate and maintain
potable water treatment facilities.
Who should take this course. Those seeking to advance in their KDHE
certification level, superintendents, managers, supervisors, and operators who
want to advance their knowledge in potable water treatment should attend this
course.
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Week 1 — Introduction, Responsibilities of the Water Operator, The Safe Water
Drinking Act and the Surface Water Treatment Rule
Week 2 — Water Mathematics: Volumes, Detention Time, Hydraulics, Dosages, and
Filtration
Week 3 — Groundwater and Wells
Week 4 — Hydraulics and Pumps
Week 5 — Basics of Chlorination, CT Calculations, Field Disinfection, Chlorine
Burnout, and Case Studies
Week 6 — Laboratory Analysis and Application
Week 7 — Alternate Water Treatment, Fluoridation
Week 8 — Clarification; Pretreatment, Coagulation, Flocculation, and
Sedimentation
Week 9 — Ion Exchange and Precipitation Softening
Week 10 — Granular Media Filtration and Membrane Filtration
Week 11 — Management of the Water Treatment Plant

The $1,250.00 tuition, includes the class handout material, 48 hours of
classroom instruction, 1 - 10 hour KDHE approved Kansas WATER workshop of the
students choice, and 2 - 6 hour Group Job Specific Instruction for a total of
70 hours of instruction.

Handout materials will be provided and will follow closely the PowerPoint
presentation during each class .

The course offers the student a free attendance of a Kansas WATER 10-hour
workshop of his/her choice. The participation in the workshop will be credited
for KDHE certification.

The course will provide two - six hour Job Specific Instruction (JSI) sessions
separate from the classroom . The JSI sessions will cover a variety of topics
of the student’s choice which are designed to meet the needs of the water
operator and will apply what is learned in the classroom to the PWSS.

Who should take this course. Those seeking to become a backup operator to the
primary water operator of a Public Water Supply System (PWSS).
